US Anti-War Student Protests and Police Raids Disrupt University Graduation Plans

As universities across the US prepare for commencement ceremonies, anti-war student protests and police crackdowns have forced schools to rethink their plans. Pro-Palestinian protests have erupted at dozens of universities, with students demanding an end to Israel's war on Gaza and divestment from companies supporting Israel's government.
In response, universities have taken various measures to ensure campus safety and maintain order during graduation events. Some have trained staff volunteers to mitigate disruptions, while others have canceled or moved key events off campus. Riot police have been called in to disperse and arrest protesters, sparking criticism from civil rights groups who argue that such tactics violate free speech and are unnecessarily violent.
The protests have been sparked by Israel's offensive in Gaza, which has killed over 34,000 people and flattened the Palestinian territory. Students are demanding that President Joe Biden do more to stop the bloodshed and are calling for universities to divest from companies supporting Israel's government.
At Columbia University, the epicenter of the student protest movement, police cleared a two-week-old encampment by arresting dozens of peaceful protesters. The university's president, Nemat Minouche Shafik, acknowledged concerns about the university's plans for its May 15 commencement.
Of the 20 universities Reuters contacted, 11 responded, and only three did not expect to alter their security protocols for the event. The altered security measures and police presence have cast a shadow over what are typically joyful ceremonies, as students and faculty grapple with the tension between free speech and campus safety.

The situation highlights the challenges universities face in balancing academic freedom, student activism, and campus safety. As the protests continue, universities must navigate these complex issues to ensure a peaceful and meaningful graduation experience for all.
